Planning a maternity photoshoot in Los Angeles can come with a lot of questions especially when you’re choosing between a studio, the beach, an outdoor location, or an experience created in your own space.
I’m Tie, a Los Angeles maternity photographer specializing in bold, colorful and editorial maternity portraits. Below, I’m answering the questions moms ask most often about preparing for and experiencing a maternity photoshoot in LA.
If your baby arrives before your maternity session, we can discuss applying your payment toward an in-home newborn session. If you’ve already booked newborn photos with me, we can plan a Mommy and Me session for when your baby is older. Either way, we’ll talk through your options and create a new plan together.
For me, anything after 36 weeks is considered “any day now,” so I generally do not conduct maternity sessions after that point. Babies have their own schedules, and standing, changing outfits and holding poses can also become more difficult as your body prepares for birth.
I may consider a session after 36 weeks if you have a scheduled delivery date and feel comfortable participating. If you’re already 36 weeks, don’t count yourself out—reach out so we can talk about what may still be possible.
A maternity photoshoot can take up to two hours, depending on the number of looks we create and whether your partner or children are included. I don’t want you to feel rushed, so we’ll also have time for changing, adjusting the set and taking breaks when needed.
During your consultation, we’ll talk about your vision, how you want to feel and what you want your images to look like. You’re welcome to share a mood board or inspiration photos, but you don’t need to have everything figured out. We’ll also discuss pricing and the next steps so you feel comfortable before booking.
It’s best to book your maternity photographer during your second trimester, ideally between 18 and 23 weeks. This gives us enough time to plan your vision, wardrobe and location before your session, which will usually take place between 28 and 34 weeks.
How far in advance should I book a maternity photographer?
Planning your maternity photoshoot should feel exciting, not like one more thing you have to figure out before the baby arrives. From choosing the right time to book to creating a session that actually feels like you, here are answers to some of the most common questions moms have when planning a maternity photoshoot in Los Angeles.

I highly recommend booking your maternity photoshoot at least six weeks before your baby shower. This gives us time to plan and complete your session, hold your reveal appointment and edit your selected images before the celebration. If you have a shorter timeline, 48-hour delivery after your reveal session may be available for a $250 rush fee.
Outdoor maternity photoshoots are usually scheduled close to sunrise or sunset, when the light is softer and more flattering. The exact start time will depend on the season and location. We’ll also consider Los Angeles traffic so you have enough time to arrive without feeling rushed.
Absolutely. A beautiful location isn’t the right location if reaching it will leave you exhausted or uncomfortable. We’ll consider parking, walking distance, terrain, restrooms and how far along you’ll be on session day. Let me know about any mobility or comfort concerns so I can recommend options that work for you.

A beach maternity photoshoot can be beautiful, but it may also include wind, cooler temperatures, crowds and walking through sand. There may not be a private place to change, so we’ll discuss wardrobe, comfort and accessibility beforehand. I’ll help you decide whether the beach fits both your vision and the experience you want.A maternity photoshoot can take up to two hours, depending on the number of looks we create and whether your partner or children are included. We’ll discuss sizing during your planning session so I can show you the options that may work best. You’re also welcome to incorporate clothing you already own into your final looks.
During your planning session, we’ll review your inspiration, talk through how you want to feel and choose pieces from my wardrobe that support the vision. We can also discuss fit and sizing together before the photoshoot. The goal is to create complete looks that feel intentional while still feeling like you.
Absolutely! If you already own something that feels like you, I want you to bring it. This could be a favorite pair of jeans, a meaningful outfit or clothing that reflects your culture or family. We can build around what you bring and pair it with pieces or accessories from my client wardrobe.

I begin with a few foundation poses, but I don’t photograph every mom the same way. I build from those poses based on your body, comfort, personality and how you naturally move. I’ll also encourage movement and pause when I see something that could become a creative maternity pose that feels unique to you.
Yes. During your planning call, you can share any areas you feel self-conscious about so I can plan with your comfort in mind. We can use personalized posing, wardrobe, fabric and angles to create coverage where you want it. For example, if you prefer not to show your arms, we can incorporate dresses, jackets or shawls from my client wardrobe.
That’s completely normal. We’ll work through the awkward part together until you start feeling more comfortable. I’ll give you clear direction, keep the session moving and can play your favorite artist to help you relax. You don’t have to arrive feeling confident—we can build that confidence during the experience.
Yes! I’ll guide your hands, posture, body placement and expressions throughout the entire photoshoot. I may demonstrate a pose or make small adjustments as we go, so you’ll never be left standing in front of the camera wondering what to do next.
No, you do not. Most of the moms I photograph are not models and have never had professional maternity photos taken before. Your session is fully directed, so I’ll guide you through each pose and help with the small adjustments that make a big difference.
Do I need to know how to pose for my maternity photoshoot?
You do not need modeling experience or a list of maternity poses before your photoshoot. I provide personalized posing guidance throughout every Los Angeles maternity session, helping with your hands, posture, angles and expressions. We’ll create comfortable, intentional poses that celebrate your body while still feeling like you.

Your family’s clothing should coordinate with your maternity looks without matching everything exactly. For example, if we’re creating a jeans look, everyone can wear different washes or styles of denim while keeping shirts and accessories cohesive. During wardrobe planning, I’ll help coordinate everyone’s outfits so the final images feel intentional. They should wear items and colors that compliment your look. For example if we are doing a family jeans look, they eveyrone can wear jeans (varying colors so its not all the same), white shirts, and white socks or no socks.
To keep the maternity experience focused and within our scheduled time, sessions are generally limited to you, your partner and your children. Well-behaved dogs and cats may be included during a mobile studio session in your home. For studio or outdoor sessions, pet participation will depend on the location’s rules and setup.
Absolutely. I provide partner and family posing guidance, so no one needs to arrive knowing what to do. I’ll direct everyone individually and together, helping with body placement, hands and expressions so your family portraits feel connected while still keeping you at the center of the maternity session.
Yes, your children can be included in your family maternity photos. They can participate throughout the session or join us for only a portion of it. We’ll plan their involvement around their age, attention span and the final images you want to create.Yes they can! just like your partner they can be there for a portion of the session or the whole thing. depends on your vision.
Nope! I’ve had moms book the entire maternity photoshoot for themselves, and I’ve had moms include their partner in every look. Your husband, wife or partner can participate as much or as little as you would like. It all depends on your vision and how you want this season documented.
Does my partner have to be in my maternity photos?
Your maternity photoshoot can include your partner and children, but it doesn’t have to. Whether you want to celebrate this season by yourself or create maternity portraits with your family, I’ll help plan and pose everyone while keeping the experience centered around you.
