If you’ve spent even one summer in Los Angeles, especially in the San Fernando Valley, then you are already aware of how intense the heat can get. Between triple-digit temperatures, warm afternoons, and homes trying to keep up with the heat, many parents expecting littles wanting a newborn session start wondering:
“Is an in-home newborn session still safe and comfortable during summer?”
As a Los Angeles newborn photographer, the answer is yes, absolutely. Your baby’s comfort and safety are always my top priority, and every newborn session is adjusted with that in mind.
One of the biggest misconceptions about newborn photography is that babies simply fall asleep naturally during sessions. But in reality, newborns are most comfortable when they’re warm, cozy, and relaxed especially for wrapped or lightly clothed posing. That’s why temperature plays such an important role during an in-home newborn session.

Newborns regulate body temperature differently than adults. What feels comfortable to us can sometimes feel cool to them, especially when they’re unswaddled or transitioning between poses.
A warm environment helps:
As a Burbank newborn photographer serving families throughout Los Angeles and the Valley, I prepare every session with this in mind especially during the summer months.
Every home is different, which is why I approach each newborn session with flexibility and safety first.
During warmer months, I may recommend:
This does not mean your home needs to become unbearably hot.
My goal is simply to create a cozy environment around baby while keeping the overall experience manageable for parents and siblings as well. If family members would like to relax in another room with cooler air during portions of the session, that is completely fine.
Because my newborn sessions are intentionally relaxed and unhurried, there’s always time for:
Nothing is rushed, and baby is never pushed beyond their comfort level.

As an in-home newborn photographer, I pay close attention to the baby’s cues throughout the session.
If baby seems too warm, unsettled, overstimulated, or uncomfortable in any way, we pause. Sometimes babies simply want to be wrapped longer. Sometimes they need extra feeding breaks. Sometimes they just want to be held as they settle. Sometimes we pivot the setup entirely and that’s okay.
Creating beautiful newborn portraits should never come at the expense of baby’s comfort.
One of the reasons I love offering studio-style newborn photography in the comfort of your home is because families can remain relaxed in their own environment while we move at baby’s pace and have any additional soothing items readily available for the baby.
