The Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) is more than just California’s largest art museum — it’s a cultural landmark nestled in the heart of LA’s Miracle Mile. With its ever-evolving collection of contemporary and classic works, LACMA attracts artists, creatives, and families alike. But beyond its galleries, LACMA’s architecture and outdoor installations offer some of the most unique backdrops for portraits, making it an ideal setting for a photoshoot for art lovers.

The museum’s campus is a mix of bold modern lines, neutral concrete textures, and iconic large-scale sculptures — from the famous Urban Light installation, to Levitated Mass, to the palm tree-lined walkways. Whether you’re drawn to clean, architectural elements or a more whimsical, artistic vibe, a photoshoot at the LACMA gives you the best of both worlds: structured elegance and creative flair. And because the space is open-air and not overly crowded (especially during golden hour), it’s perfect for an intimate, serene maternity session where you can truly feel centered and celebrated.

While most people are familiar with the Urban Light installation (those dreamy rows of vintage street lamps), my client and I opted for a more unexpected background for their photoshoot at the LACMA. Instead of the usual, we photographed their maternity pictures at the underrated section — The Levitated Mass by Michael Heizer.

This massive rock installation, with its dramatic tunnel and surrounding concrete architecture, created a beautiful, sculptural backdrop for this maternity session. It perfectly framed the couple with leading lines and natural light that highlighted their faces and the baby bump. The neutral tones of the space allowed mom’s blush-pink dress to pop beautifully, especially with the sunlight bouncing off the surfaces to give the whole scene a soft, glowing warmth. It’s modern, minimal, and unexpectedly romantic — everything this couple was hoping for in their photoshoot.

This mama specifically requested a session at LACMA because of her deep love for art and architecture. She knew this section of the property would give us that ethereal light and dreamy atmosphere she was envisioning.

After soaking up all the artistic vibes at LACMA, we walked over to the nearby park to bring in another part of their story into their images — their two adorable dogs! Not only were they cute and ready to have their pictures taken, this added a playful, personal touch to the session and gave us a little greenery to balance out the architectural setting we took earlier in the evening.

Their dogs were so happy to see her and photographed so well during the session, making their maternity photoshoot even more special and unique to their story as they anticipate the arrival of their little one.

If you’re an expecting momma in Los Angeles and looking for an outdoor location that offers variety and architecture, I highly recommend considering the LACMA. There’s definitely something there for everyone. It’s very quiet so you can peacefully have your session and feel beautiful while doing it.
